The accents of the British Isles
martes, 09 de diciembre de 2014

It may not be one of the largest countries in the world, but if you travel around Great Britain and Ireland, you will find a vast array of different accents and dialects.

These regional accents give people from different cities in the UK a sense of identity, and is one of the many things which give the British people a richness of diversity when it comes to culture and traditions.

There are many theories as to why there are so many different regional accents and one is that up until the 1930's, many British people would have lived in the same village, town or city for their whole life. Because of this, specific ways of speaking developed in separate regions, even if they were no more than 50 miles apart on a map.

Nowadays, it is easy for people to move around the country for work or study, but they tend to keep their accent as a sign of their identity. Besides, an accent is not something you can simply get rid of!

This video shows just how different the regional accents of the British Isles are from one part of the country to another...
